What Is The Difference Between Urine Spraying And Inappropriate Urination?

Writer's picture: Veterinary InnovatorsVeterinary Innovators

Urine spraying in cats is when they use their urine to mark an object or space/area. Due to additional pheromones in their urine, sprayed urine is usually more pungent than the normal urine in the litter box. Though urine spraying is a common behavior problem for cat parents, urine marking is used by cats for indirect communication.

By urine marking, cats tell their presence and represent their territory. This is also their way of advertising themselves when they are looking for mates. It also helps them to keep unwanted animals or individuals away from them.

The difference that you can tell whether it is urine spraying or litter box issue is that urine marks have lesser volume than pee and it is often sprayed in vertical areas or surfaces like the walls, pieces of furniture, or sides of a table.

If your pet’s spray marking behavior bothers you, it is a good idea to talk to your vets Burlington, ON about it.
