Different snake species have different preferences when it comes to being handled. Some of them show no sign of temper when you hold them. On the other hand, some might act defensive at first but eventually grow fond of their owner's touch. Lastly, some snakes do not like to be touched, no matter how long they have been together. It would be best to keep your distance from these snakes. Never attempt to hold them with your bare hands. Instead, use a clamp stick or snake hook.

In the past, snakes were generally divided into three groups:

  • harmless or nonpoisonous

  • rear-fanged or mildly- poisonous

  • front-fanged or venomous

These labels appear to be clear, yet they are pretty deceptive. It is now known that some of the supposedly harmless snake species have poisonous saliva. For instance, bites from various water and garter snake cousins have been implicated in the deaths of humans. In addition, a lot of non-venomous species have strong constrictors. A couple of them are huge enough to threaten a person's life.

Any sign of illness exhibited by your pet should require a visit to your veterinarian Marion, IA area for proper medical attention.
