Irish Wolfhounds are ancient dogs from Ireland. They used to hunt and serve in wars and nearly went extinct in the 1800s when most large prey such as deer, wild boars, and wolves became rare in Ireland. Fortunately, these dogs were revived and became the wonderful, admirable companion that they are.

Considered the tallest breed, Irish Wolfhounds are also among the largest sighthounds (dogs that chase moving targets). Even though they used to be war dogs, Irish Wolfhounds are gentle. They do well with anyone— from kids, fellow dogs, and maybe even cats. Long walks are necessary to maintain the breed's large body. Otherwise, they may become couch potatoes.

They are quiet at home but aren't suited in apartments. Also, you may need to carry them when they are sick and need to use the stairs. Overall, Irish Wolfhounds thrive best when they have opportunities to run in a large well-fenced yard.
